Situated “near a low foothill, at Heaven’s door sill” as the ballad says, the Almașu commune is the privileged owner of a 9000 years local history. The area was lived in the Neolithic period, the Romans left many traces of their passing, but most of the proofs we have about Almașu are from the Middle Ages, when here was built a monastery and a stronghold.
All the other villages are mentioned in the early days, in documents that are not older than the 15th century: Babiu 1291, Cutiș 1453, Jebucu 1391, Mesteacănu 1431, Petrinzel 1370, Sfăraș 1262, Stana 1288, Țăudu 1334.
The commune history is strongly linked with the existence on its territory of the Almașu Stronghold, built in the 13th century (1247 – 1278) to protect the people, after the tartars invasions.
Having a generous territorial space, Almașu commune is covering a vast domain going below the West Meseș Mountains slopes.
The touristic natural background of the commune is completed by the anthropic touristic objectives of great value as the ruins of the Almașu Stronghold from the 13th century and the ensemble of Csaky castle 1815-1819 from Almașu, the ensemble of the reformed church from Sfăraș 15th – 18th century, the archaeological site from Stana, the Reformed church from Stana with coffered ceiling 1640, modified in 1742 and enlarged in 1838, all registered in the list of architecture monuments with patrimony value (cultural and historical heritage).
