The Reformed Church Assembly

A gothic monument, 15th – 18th century

The reformed church from Sfăraș was built between 1505 and 1510, with the support of the landlord, Veres Janos, whose funeral stone was built in the wall of the church. The church is located in the South part of the village, on a small hill and it is built from wrought stone. It is composed by a rectangular nave, loft with a polygonal closure and brick portico.

The place was destroyed during the rebellion leaded by Rakoczi the second, the walls falling down in 1741. In 1750, the new church was built, of the ruins of the old one.

Inside, you can admire the beautiful painted furniture, made in the 18th century. Specific to the medieval churches from the Calata Country is the coffered ceiling, beautifully decorated with different ornaments and motives typical for the late Renascence period in Transylvania.

The ceiling’s cassettes were made by Asztalos Janos, the leader of the construction works and Umling Lorinc. The pulpit was made by Umling in 1750 and the pipe organ in 1848. Next to the church’s nave there is the wooden bell tower, typical 18th century construction. The wooden bell tower with shingle roof, damaged by a lightning in 1860, hides the oldest bell in the area. It was casted in 1475, in Matias the king’s period of time.

Casetele tavanului au fost realizate de Asztalos János, conducătorul lucrărilor și Umling Lőrinc. Amvonul a fost realizat în 1750 de Umling, iar orga în 1848. Lângă nava bisericii se găsește clopotnița din lemn, construcție tipică secolului 18, turnul clopotniță cu acoperiș de șindrilă avariat în 1860 de un fulger, adăpostește cel mai vechi clopot al zonei. A fost turnat în 1475 pe timpul regelui Matias.

În Sfăraș se situează şi castelul familiei Szentiványi, construit în secolul XIX.
